The Ayutthaya Kingdom was the second kingdom of Siam after the Sukhothai Kingdom, with its capital located in Ayutthaya, meaning “the city that cannot be destroyed.” The Ayutthaya Kingdom (1350–1767) lasted for 417 years and had 33 monarchs, making it the longest reigning dynasty in Thai history. The kingdom once had three royal palaces and over 300 temples. In 1767, the Burmese army invaded and captured this “indestructible city.” All the royal palaces, temples, city gates, and residences in the city were burned to the ground, turning it into a ruin. The Thai people moved the capital to Thonburi, and the area became a deserted wasteland. The destroyed Buddha statues and ruins that remain today have been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site and are classified as a Grade I historical preservation zone.
